This design of the Georgia State Flag was adopted in 1956, replacing the stars and bars version. The design incorporates the confederate battle flag, which was not used in the first flag as it was feared that it could lead to another federal occupation of the state. Georgia was occupied after the civil war by federal troops twice for failing to ratify the 14th ammendment to the U.S. Constitution.
